Symptoms of Stress and Anxiety
Stress and anxiety can take many forms, sometimes manifesting physically in the form of back pain, headaches, migraines or numbness and tingling. You may experience a rapid heart rate, constipation and diarrhea, or even panic attacks, which for some people can have a similar feeling to a heart attack.
Individuals dealing with stress and anxiety may struggle with:
- Getting healthy restful sleep
- Relaxing and enjoying social situations
- Feeling 'frozen' or unable to complete basic daily tasks
- Repetitive worries, questions or uncomfortable thoughts
- Feeling dizzy or light-headed
- Low sex drive
- Weight gain
- Easily strained or pulled muscles
Symptoms of stress-induced adrenal fatigue
One of the most common signs of hormone-induced stress is the sensation of feeling “wired and tired.” This means that even though you are awake and may feel jittery, there is still a lingering feeling of fatigue. Increased levels of stress are often linked to adrenal fatigue, as well as symptoms related to stress and anxiety.
The cause of adrenal fatigue
Your adrenal glands (located on top of the kidneys) are responsible for producing adrenaline. Adrenaline is a hormone that kicks in when you’re in a dangerous or stressful situation. If someone is chronically stressed, then the adrenal glands can become overworked.
As your body recognizes the dysfunction in your adrenal glands, it initially tries to overcompensate by working harder to push out more adrenaline. The additional adrenaline may cause bouts of anxiety or even panic attacks. Elevated adrenaline levels can lead to your body producing more cortisol, a stress hormone. Higher levels of cortisol can then lead to further sleep disruption.
